Why It Matters Now
In April 2024, the EPA finalized the first-ever federal limits on PFAS in drinking water — setting a maximum contaminant level of 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS. Water utilities have until 2031 to comply.
That means for the next several years, millions of Americans are drinking water that exceeds the new federal standard — legally.
Municipal treatment plants were not designed to remove PFAS. They were built for bacteria and sediment. The responsibility for PFAS removal, microplastics, lead, and chloramine increasingly falls on the homeowner.
